If you ever drove an hour or so down I-44 southwest of St Louis you might have seen signs for “Bob’s Gasoline Alley”, along with a whole lot of big gas station signs on the other side of a field from the highway. It was a roadside museum near Cuba, MO, with a large collection of Route 66 gas station memorabilia.
I go past there regularly. A while back I realized the signs were disappearing, and I even ended up on the highway next to a trailer hauling some of them . Then I saw the Bob’s Gasoline Alley sign had a new note about an auction. It turns out Bob died earlier this year. E verything went up for auction.
The bits of the business visible from the highway are vanishing more and more, and soon it will just be a memory of something I used to see.

The Interstate system is a marvel, but its legacy of destruction is quite deep.

Bummer. I’ll miss seeing all that stuff.

Ah, damn. Pissed at myself for never actually going in there... Always wanted to, never took the time. Always gave me a smile driving by.
RIP, Bob.
Hope the llamas went to a good home.
